What is Information Governance?

The Information Governance (IG) market can be defined as the market for goods and services designed to help organizations manage their information in accordance with externally or internally defined criteria. Although IG is most commonly associated with externally-mandated criteria (such as laws, regulations, etc.), it is equally important to recognize that internally-derived criteria (such as providing better customer service, faster time to market, etc.) also provide significant IG drivers.

IG is a relatively new term for which the precise meaning is still being shaped by the market and those that promote its use. However, it is clear that the term incorporates (in whole or in part) concepts from disciplines such as:

  • Records Management
  • Compliance
  • Information Management
  • IT Governance (such as COBIT and ITIL)
  • Corporate Governance (such as COSO, SOX, PCAOB Standards)
  • Information Security/Information Protection
  • Privacy
  • Enterprise search, portals, and knowledge management
  • Enterprise content management
  • Document management
  • Archiving
  • Business continuity, backup and disaster recovery
  • E-Discovery

This demonstrates that IG is in fact a multidisciplinary pursuit.

A Practice of Forensics Consulting Solutions, LLC

The Origin of FCS IG

FCS IG is a division of Forensics Consulting Solutions, LLC (FCS), a leading e-discovery consulting company with a global reach. In the course of providing e-discovery services, FCS witnesses the pain and cost of information mismanagement on a daily basis. We founded FCS IG to help our clients take control of their information environment before litigation or regulatory investigations begin.

The FCS Professional Services Group focuses on helping clients mange their information after litigation or an investigation has already commenced.

FCS IG helps clients before a lawsuit or investigation begins. We focus on helping the client manage their information better so when a lawsuit or investigation does begin, the client is better prepared to find and prepare the evidence that is required, thereby reducing the cost and pain of e-discovery.

However, our services also help clients outside of the e-discovery context by making information easier for employees to find and use it; getting rid of unnecessary information (thus reducing costs); and complying with federal and state laws and regulations.
